Taranga Cine Awards

(Introduction) While movies made for audience’s entertainment and amusement, awards being given for movie makers’ encouragement. An award for an actor, director or comedian is a promise – a promise to give audience even better work and performance. With a similar aim, Taranga TV of Odisha organizes Cine Awards for filmmakers, artists, crew who delivers their best work in a year. Best Film: Balunga Toka Balunga Toka is a movie directed by Sudhakar Basant to show the positive side of a loafer who generally considered by society a useless, hopeless, worthless being. Apart from the story, Anubhav and Barsa’s chemistry, and some really foot thumping locally flavored music, Balunga Toka won the audience love this year and came out to be the most popular film of 2011. At Taranaga Cine Awards, this is the movie which bagged the best film award for the year 2011.

Best Actor: Anubhav Mohanty (Balunga Toka) Ollywood Superstar Anubhav Mohanty, the dashing actor who started his career as a model, after doing about 100 video album songs, gradually move to odia movie industry to prove his talent.

And this year, Ollywood cine stars Anubhav proved that by bagging the best actor award for his outstanding work in the blockbuster ‘Balunga Toka’.

Best Actress: Archita Sahoo (Chocolate)

Archita is versatile young actress who has all the potential to be established as an actress of substance. She is an incredible Odishi dancer who has also won National Scholarship in dance. Despite of number of movies she already has done, she won the best actress award this year for her substantial work in ‘Chocolate’.

Best debut actor – Harihar (Mu Premi Mu Pagal)

This dashing dancing boy Harihar has earlier won the hearts of Indian in ‘India Got Talent’ by his extra ordinary dancing skills. But last year, when he entered to Ollywood by ‘Mu Premi Mu Pagala’, he literally proved India really got talent. With his inherent quality of smooth body movement, he is able to make a movie ‘musical’ which a romantic movie needs to be. The award of best debut actor went to Harihar Das this year for his first break in Odia movie “Mu Premi Mu Pagala”.

Best Debut Actress- Anuva Sourya (Mu Premi Mu Pagal)

Anubha, the new bubbly girl in Odia cine industry, daughter of the popular beautiful odia actress Pushpa Panda, has made her entry to Ollywood with the romantic flick “Mu Premi Mu Pagala’. Anubha, an equally talented girl as her mother, is also a good Odishi dancer trained under Padmashree late Guru Gangadhar Pradhan. This year she is able to win the heart of audience by his charming performance in her debut movie and able to win the best debut actress award at Taranga Cine Awards.

Best Supporting Actor: Minaketan (BalungaToka)

Minaketan is a skilled actor who is in odia movie industry for ages and has done over thirty characters. He has given his performance in various shades and colours. In ‘Balunga Toka’ as the father of the balunga toka (Anubhav), audience could enjoy the roller coaster ride of emotions which Minaketan was able to deliver. His performance further shined as he was chosen best supporting actor for ‘Balunga Toka’.

Best Supporting Actress – Aparajita Mohanty (Chocolate)

Aparajita is doubtlessly one of the most beautiful acting geniuses of the decade. She has shown the flair of her acting in more than fifty odia films. A living legend and example for the current generation of actresses, she is able to deliver yet another powerful performance in ‘Chocolate’ for which the award for best supporting actress went to her this year.

Best Villain: Samaresh (Loafer)

Samaresh’s passion for acting is best reflected in his acting career. To build a firm acting foundation he has undergone the pains of struggle while being trained at National School of Drama and in Bollywood. After he had done a number of plays, serials and movies including 23rd March 1931 Saheed Bhagat Singh, he returned to Ollywood to mark a difference. Apart from his positive character acting in remarkable films like ‘Dhauli Express’ and ‘Matira Bandhana’, he usually takes challenge of playing a negative role on screen. And, for the negative character he played in ‘Loafer’, he is able to bag the best villain award this year.

Best Comedian – Papu Pom Pom (Balunga Toka)

Papu Pom Pom is an overnight sensation when he entered to the entertainment hub. His comedies, his satire, his sarcasm give audience an opportunity to, what we contemporarily call, roflol (rolling on floor laughing out loud). ‘Balunga Toka’ is his first feature film which from the very start established him as a comedian for future. Again Papu is riding high as he received the best comedian award this year for his extra ordinary performance in ‘Balunga Toka’.

Best Director – Susant Mani (Chocolate)

Susant Mani is a solicitous filmmaker who strongly believes in originality. He is fond of doing ground breaking experiments in filmmaking. After five commercial blockbusters in Ollywood, last year he went on to present audience an innocent love story which make the viewers realise that we have a gifted director in Odisha who is capable of delivering a movie equal to those of Bollywoods. Susant Mani this year bagged the best director award for his unique piece of movie ‘Chocolate’.

Best Lyrist – Bapu Goswami (Chocolate)

Though Bapu Goswami stated his career in Ollywood as a dialogue writer, he flourished during these years as a thought provoking lyricist. In present scenario he is one of the most sought after lyricist whose wordings in the songs able to hold both attention and emotion of the listeners. For his heart warming lyrics in ‘Chocolate’, he bagged the best lyricist award this year.

Best Dialogue – Bapu Goswami (Chocolate)

Be it lyrics or dialogues, poetry flows all in his works. Bapu Goswami’s dialogues have the power to move audience even without music or background score. For his outstanding work in ‘Chocolate’ Bapu Goswami received the best dialogue award this year.

Best Music Director – Premananda (Chandani I Miss You)

Once his songs start airing in TV and FMs, they take Odia music lovers by storm. Premanand is the music composer of generation to come who has carved a niche in Ollywood with varied ranges of music he has composed. For his melodious rendering of romance in ‘Chandani I Miss You’ he bagged the best music director award this year.

Best Dance Director- Susant Mani (Chocolate)

Susant Mani started his career in movie industry as a dance director and afterwards reaches the soaring height of success as an editor, director. In the movie chocolate, despite his direction he took care of the dance sequences as well. And the award for best dance direction also went to Susant Mani this year.

Best Playback Singer (Male) – Babusan (Chocolate)

Being the child of Uttam & Aparajita Mohanty, Babushan is inherently talented actor. Apart from the acting which he started some years back, he is a born singer. Before perusing acting, he wanted to go into singing career. For his singing in Chocolate, he bagged the best male singer award for ‘Chocolate’ this year.

Best Playback Singer (Female) – Tapu Mishra (Chandani I Miss You)

Tapu Mishra is the young singer who has the ability to render voice in various ranges. Be it item or soulful romantic songs, she handles them with smooth fluidity. This year, she is the one to bag the best female singer award for her songs in ‘Chandani I Miss You’.

Best Cinematographer – A.K. Bir (Jianta Bhuta)

Apurba Kishore Bir, a FTII alumni, needs no introduction or conclusion. He is a name that is recognized internationally. He belongs to an age of filmmakers which is, generally considered, golden. AK Bir is at one stage a director and cinematographer who has delivered some of the finest films in Odia like ‘Shesha Drushti’, ‘Aranyaka’, ‘Lavanya Preeti’, ‘Aadi Mimansa’. After a number of years, he returned to Odia cine industry as the cinematographer of the critically acclaimed movie based on Dongaria Kondh tribals of Koraput region “Jionta Bhuta’. For his exceptional photography in ‘Jionta Bhuta’ that captures

both the beauty of Koraput’s landscapes and the many facades of human emotion, Taranga Cine Awards team felt proud enough to honor him with the best cinematography award this year.

Best Editor – Birenjyoti Mohanty (Chocolate)

With ‘Luck’ and ‘Jodi Breakers’, Birenjyoti Mohanty has already set a milestone in Bollywood as a finest editor. In Ollywood, his first edited movie was ‘Chocolate’. As originally from Odisha, he proudly received his first award as best editor for ‘Chocolate’ at Taranga Cine Awards.

Lifetime Achievement Award: Sarat Pujari

A glimpse of Sarat Pujari from the working stills of the movie ‘Mati ra Manisha’ is enough to give a goose bump to anyone. The emotion, the trauma he reflected in his movies is remarkably superlative. One of the legendary actors of Odia film industry, he has set an example by his ‘Matira Manisha’, ‘Sesha Drusti’, ‘Aranya Rodan’ etc. For his outstanding contribution to the odia movie industry, Taranga Cine Award proudly conferred Sri Sarat Pujari lifetime achievement award this year.
